Mangalore - Happy onam celebrations in town hall in the city

The Kerala Samajam was doing to a wonderful job in protecting the Indian customs and the vibrant Kerala traditions, said the Mayor of Mangalore Mr. R. Shankar Bhat. He was inaugurating the Onam celebrations in town hall in the city.
Mr. Bhat was earlier welcomed by host of Kerala Samajam leaders and an actor dressed as Maveli - 'Mahabali' who is a legendary king that ruled over the universe.
Mr. Shankar Bhat said one of the Dashavatharas of Lord Vishnu is that of Vamana Avarathara and the Kerala had its own legend about Mahabali (also known as Maveli). They believed that Mahabali reappears on this earth on the occasion of Onam and blesses the world.
On this occasion entire Kerala will celebrate with Pookalam (Rangoli made of flowers) wear new dresses and have an elaborate pooja and later a hearty meal. This tradition has been kept alive in Mangalore also by the people of Kerala origin Mr. Bhat told.
As a part of the celebrations the Kerala Samajam had organised several programmes including Pookalam competitions, cultural programmes and a special Kerala Samajam lunch for few chosen dignitaries.
The dignitaries were welcomed by a battery of traditional drummers of Kerala. Ladies dressed in typical Kerala dresses was a sight to see.
