Movie reviews

Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu

Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu
January 31, 2009
Cast : Vishnu, Saranya Mohan, Kishore
Music : V.Selvaganesh
Director : Susindhran

After all those mindless action mass masalas dished out in the recent past, debutant director Susindhran's Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu is refreshingly fresh and innovative.

The film has a tight script but does not break new ground, nor does it tell a dramatically different story. But what it does have is a very ‘clean’ screenplay with all the typical elements of a good sports film in place.

The Kabadi coach played by Kishore, may be unconventional from what the actor has played so far. But as an inspiring coach who can make a bunch of guys from a small town forget their differences and play as a team is a revelation. The first rule Mr. Coach teaches his boys is to fight against all odds, religion and rejects in life to triumph in the end.

In fact, Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu has traces of Director Shimit Amin’s Chak De India with Tamil nativity and a game that is hugely popular in rural Tamilnadu. There’s a set-up, a build-up and truly stunning twist in the climax. The story is executed neatly with the right elements in place and hence the film works perfectly.

In fact, the plot and the screenplay of Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu is a no-brainer, it is designed to be a crowd-pleaser from the very word go — there’s the basic underdog story at the core, there is soft romance ( Vishnu and Saranya) thrown in, pleasing and melodious songs and an excellent background score (debutant V. Selvaganesh). On the downside the first half is a bit slow and predictable, the Thiruvizha scenes and the milieu, looks familiar and has traces of some recent films

How can you not root for an underdog team of simple, uneducated group of youngsters who are ridiculed by their respective families? Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu is a compelling film to watch and much of its charm lies in the fresh lead pair, the bunch of simple villagers who are so lovable and endearing. The comedy track is part of the film and is thoroughly enjoyable like the newly married pencil thin guy who gorges Parottas by the dozens.

Kishore is the scene stealer and has done a neat job very convincingly. New face Vishnu is promising as he gets his emotions correct. Saranya is cute and her expressive eyes say it all. All the new guys in the Kabadi team are simply too good.

On the whole, this film will surely keep you glued to your seat because the match scenes look real and edge of the seat. It’s a sports film in the true spirit and if even if you are not a fan of Kabadi game, it’s unlikely that the film will bore you because it is fast paced with a racy lead to an unexpected and stunning climax.

panchamirtham - Review
Cast: Nassar, Jayaram, Saranya, Karunas, Mano Bala
Music: Sundar.C Babu
Director: Raju Easwaran

Abirami Ramnathan's debut film as producer Panchamritam supposed to be a film for children is more of a slapstick comedy. The film based on the producers serial Maayavi Mareechan on Sun TV, is handled by Raju Easwaran the guy who directed the television fantasy serial.

The basic thread of the film is from Ramayan, about the story of Mareechan, the brother of Ravana. The film starts with Mareechan (Jayaram) disguised as a deer to attract Seetha gets killed by Lord Rama's arrow and a curse that he will remain a rock, till somebody will free him after a few centuries.

Cut to modern day, Rajaram (Nasser) is a rich estate owner in Ooty whose relatives- M.S Bhaskar, Ilavarasu and Mayilsamy are milking him off. Enter a smart girl Seetha (Saranya Mohan) who comes in as Rajaram's PA, and sees through the game of his relatives. Now the comedy trio wants to bump off Seetha who has fallen in love with the cook of the house Sriram (Aravind).

They appoint killer Pandi (Karunas) and his assistant ( Ganja Karuppu). She is thrown off a cliff, but lands on Mareechan's rock and his curse is lifted. Mareechan is indebted to Seetha who is the only person who can see him and he becomes her protector. Meanwhile Manickam (Nassar) a dark and illiterate fisherman gives freedom to a Genie Idumban (Raju Easwaran), whose only purpose seems to be to marry Mandakini (Samiksha), Mareechan's sweetheart! This leads to a lot of mumbo-jumbo, magical fights between the good and evil forces and ultimately the good guys winning over the bad guys and everybody living happily ever after.

It looks like a modern day Vitilacharya film that has gone out of fashion some decades back. The films graphics and special effects are very ordinary and at times quite embarrassing.

The plus points if one looks carefully are its comedy scenes, as the famous five- M.S Bhaskar, Ilavarasu, Karunas, Ganja Karuppu, and Mayilsamy tries to make it a laugh riot.

They occasionally provide some fun, though some of their comic interludes have been ripped off from other films. Saranya Mohan looks pretty, while Nassar shines in a dual role. The music of Sundar.C Babu is ok, though some of the tunes has the heard before feel.

On the whole it is a decent attempt by Abirami Ramanathan to make a fun filled children fantasy film, that works to a certain extent in providing some laughs to its target audiences.
